ATI launches Alan Rogers Innovation Award
PhD students and early career researchers at the University are invited to apply for the Alan Rogers Innovation Award, which has been launched in memory of Professor Alan Rogers, a leading expert in photonics and former Visiting Professor at the University.
The Award, which is worth up to a maximum of £5,000 in any one year, has been established to support and encourage innovation and enterprise in the field of nanotechnology with an emphasis on sensors and photonics. The Award winner can use the funding flexibly provided that all funds are used to support the commercialisation of their work.
The Award is supported by Mark Bornhoft in memory of Alan Rogers, who was a Visiting Professor at Surrey’s Advanced Technology Institute (ATI) from 2001 until his retirement in 2008. He was previously Head of the Electronic Engineering Department at Kings College, London. Acknowledged as a leader in photonics and the use of fibre optics for sensing, Professor Rogers published over 200 papers and held 14 patents. The business he founded to commercialise his sensor technology in the security, oil and gas sectors – Polarmetrix – was acquired by Fotech in 2008.
Applicants for the 2016 to 2017 Award should submit a short business case in writing to Professor Ravi Silva in the ATI by 17th December 2016. A shortlist of applicants will then be invited to present their ideas to a selection panel.
