Meet the academic: Dr Christos Mavis
Dr Christos Mavis, Programme Director for Surrey Business School's MSc Corporate Finance programme, tells us what is so important about gaining a postgraduate qualification in the financial world.
Please introduce yourself – perhaps you could tell us something that isn’t on your staff profile page?
As well as my interests in corporate finance (with the fifth most-read article in European Journal of Finance), I am a keen tennis player and I have won four times the Mixed Doubles tournament title at Surrey Sports Park.
What’s your favourite memory of being a student?
The first day I enrolled at university, with the anticipation of great challenges ahead and the desire to learn more, but also to meet other fellow students with the same interests.
Why did you become a professional academic?
What fascinated me the most throughout my student career was the engagement I had with tutors who were talented in transferring their knowledge. Working as an academic provides me with the opportunity to build on this knowledge and disseminate it through my research outputs and teaching activities.
What excites you about your current role?
The constant challenges of the dynamic and complex international financial environment, and investigating these in the postgraduate programme to develop the next wave of financial leaders.
What is your particular area of academic expertise, and why are you passionate about it?
I specialise in mergers and acquisitions, which have become more prominent in the developing economies during the last decade. Keeping abreast of current market takeovers and dissolutions in the daily news feeds my interest in the capital structures of these organisations, as well as the current trends in the M&A market.
What fascinated me the most throughout my student career was the engagement I had with tutors who were talented in transferring their knowledge.
Why should people study corporate finance at postgraduate level?
A postgraduate qualification in Corporate Finance will enable our students to differentiate themselves from other graduates as they will have enhanced their undergraduate degree with a Masters qualification in a specialist field from one of the top schools in the country.
In addition, the modules in this programme are being taught by expert research academics in the areas of corporate finance and corporate governance and experienced practitioners with many years of industry experience.
Finally, the programme places emphasis on the professional development through the Bloomberg Market Concepts integrated in our modules, a CFA preparatory course, and the applied research dissertation using top notch databases while being supervised by our experienced academics.
What are you looking for in a postgraduate student?
We are looking for highly motivated students who are seeking to explore their potential and achieve success in the area of corporate finance.
What is the highlight of your time at Surrey?
I have won the teaching award in Finance and Accounting twice and was thrilled to be recognised in this endeavour, which highlights the great connections that Surrey academics have with their students.
