Students meet respected Senior Retail Executive Andrew Jennings

The Department of Marketing and Retail Management and Professor Steve Wood were delighted to welcome Andrew Jennings to Surrey Business School this week. Andrew joined final year undergraduate students studying the International Retailing module to share his experience and provide an overview of the state of the ever-changing retail market.

Andrew is a Senior Retail Executive with a wealth of experience spanning over 45 years. He has leadership experience and a track record in helping businesses get their profits and sales on track. His leadership knowledge has reached almost every continent and he has worked with the most respected high-end, speciality and department stores, including Harrods, Brown Thomas, Holt Renfrew, Karstadt Warenhaus and Saks Fifth Avenue to name a few, making him well placed to share his knowledge and passion of retail with the business leaders of tomorrow.

Andrew used his open discussion session with the students to outline the fundamentals of staying relevant in today’s industry. He reflected on the current challenges within the retail industry, as well as discussing the impact of new technologies and the growth of the online consumer

Drawing on his experience, and talking students through his book ‘Almost Is Not Good Enough: How to Win or Lose in Retail' he detailed the importance of the customer and the ongoing need to innovate. Additionally, he highlighted that talent has a huge role to play within retail. Brands need leadership that can inspire, management that can implement and front-line staff that can exceed expectations. Before finishing up with a Q&A, Andrew reflected on the unprecedented change the industry has seen, highlighting that it’s vital to embrace change.

As part of the International Retailing module students study the growing international retail competition within developed and developing markets.
