Surrey academics co-organise a major conference in China

On 9-10 October 2018, Surrey China Law Centre, together with International Law School of China University of Political Science and Law and the British Institute of International and Comparative Law, held a major international conference on "China’s Belt & Road Initiative: Ideas, Law and Policy” in Park Plaza Hotel in Beijing.

Prof Kong Qingjiang, Dean of School of International Law of China University of Political Science and Law, welcomed all conference participants as the local host of the conference. Mrs Zhang Yuejiao, former member of the WTO Appellate Body judge and a distinguished international law scholar, gave the keynote speech. Prof Ming Du, Chair in Chinese & Comparative Law and Director of Surrey China Law Centre, Dr Ira Lindsay, Senior Lecturer in Finance Law and Ethics; Dr Joshua Andresen, Senior Lecturer in National Security and Foreign Relations Law; and Mrs Mala Sharma, a PhD researcher at Surrey Law School, presented their recent research on China’s Belt and Road policy at the conference. Prof Du and Dr Lindsay also chaired panel discussions. 

The outcome of the conference will be included in a special symposium issue of Chinese Journal of Global Governance (Brill). The special issue will be edited by Prof Kong Qingjiang, Prof Ming Du and Dr Markus Gehring, University Lecturer at Cambridge Faculty of Law and the Arthur Watts Senior Research Fellow at British Institute of International and Comparative Law.
