Surrey steps towards sustainability

The University has taken several steps towards sustainability, by pledging to ban single-use plastic and reduce water waste.

Plastic Bottles

As of 6 December 2019, the University has pledged to stop providing single-use plastic cups across campus. As part of this commitment, Surrey is phasing out the plastic cups that were purchased prior to 6 December and has begun to replace them with compostable cups which are 100 per cent vegetable derived.

The University’s long-term goal is to have all staff and students use a reusable cup or bottle at refill points. To make it easier do so, Surrey began installing further refill points from early February 2020.

The University has also committed to reduce water use, partnering with Thames Water as part of their ‘Smarter Business Visits’ programme. This aims to review and improve water efficiency across campus with an estimated saving in excess of 50,000,000 litres per year, to support the University’s commitment to reducing its water use by 15 per cent.
