Experimental study on the treatment of pharmaceutics as emerging contaminants in wastewater using ultrasound
In recent decades, pharmaceuticals as a chemical group used in health care, diagnosis aids, cure, treatment, and prevention of disease, have been widely detected in the water cycle, including surface waters, wastewater, groundwater, and drinking-water. Their presence in water has raised concerns regarding the potential risks to human health and the entire ecological system. The technologies commonly used in water/wastewater treatment plants are not capable to completely capture/remove these chemicals and consequently, these pollutants are building up over time in the water cycle by increase in production and consumption of these products. In this project, application of ultrasound as a powerful advance oxidation process (AOP) is studied for removal of pharmaceuticals with different chemical characteristics.
