Ultrasonic remediation of pharmaceutical emerging contaminants (ECs) in water/wastewater
In recent decades, pharmaceuticals as a chemical group used in health care, diagnosis aids, cure, treatment, and prevention of diseases, have been widely detected in the water cycle, including surface waters, wastewaters, groundwaters, and drinking water. Their presence in water has raised concerns regarding the potential risks to human health and the entire ecological system. The technologies commonly used in water/wastewater treatment plants are not capable of completely capturing/removing these chemicals and consequently, the pollutants are building up over time in the water cycle by the increase in production and consumption of these products. In this PhD project, the application of ultrasound as a powerful advanced oxidation process (AOP) is studied for the removal of pharmaceuticals with different chemical characteristics.
