Music at Surrey has an international reputation for leading scholarship and creativity. We have a long tradition of excellence and have been ranked 1st by the Guardian in its 2017 league table of UK music departments, and 2nd in 2018, in recognition of the extraordinary achievements of our students and staff. The National Student Survey results for 2017 included a 94.8% rating for overall student satisfaction with our programmes.
We are a thriving community of music makers, scholars, composers and performers, participating in degree programmes in which popular, classical and experimental musics all have equal emphasis.
We encourage our students to engage in scholarship, composition and performance, and our programmes are designed to provide the foundational and specialist skills for professional engagement with musical understanding and creation.
Our musical events, research activities and teaching programmes bring world-leading musicians, performers, scholars and researchers to the Department on a regular basis, to create an active musical community and to support rigorous inquiry, knowledge generation and innovation.
Our Music students are able to work alongside student sound engineers enrolled on the world-renowned Tonmeister programme, as well as video and cinematography engineers and multi-media content producers from the Department of Music and Media's sibling programmes in Film and Video Production Engineering Digital Media Arts. The combination of these disciplines creates a unique environment to develop musical skills at the forefront of research, technology and the requirements of today's professional music industry.
Our music facilities include a recital hall, teaching spaces, edit rooms and instrumental practice rooms.
