Astra takes first prize in UK art competition

Theatre Studies graduate Astra Papachristodoulou has won a national art competition after pursuing her love of painting and poetry since leaving Surrey.

Astra entered the Pèbèo Mixed Media Art Competition, with thousands of submissions from around the UK. As a result, her painting, ‘Distraction of a Gentleman’, was exhibited alongside the works of 38 emerging UK-based artists at the A&D Gallery in London earlier this month. At the end of the exhibition, Astra’s painting received the most votes through a week-long public vote, and was crowned the first winner of the Pèbèo Art Prize.

She said: “Being part of this competition has been one of the best experiences of my life. I’m very excited for the doors to be opened ahead, following this recent achievement. I couldn’t have done it without my great teachers at Surrey who encouraged me to pursue my passion for art, and taught me to always aim above and beyond.”

Since graduating Astra’s poems have appeared in several magazines and anthologies such as Visual Verse, Streetcake Magazine and Synchronised Chaos and has showcased her paintings at the Ivy Arts Centre and The Studio on campus. She is also co-founder of the artist association group ProArtè, started while a student at Surrey.
