Going Japanese earns graduate top restaurant award

From student to restaurateur in under a year is impressive enough, but graduate Calvin Jor has gone one better – his restaurant has been named the best in Surrey and Hampshire by Eagle Radio listeners.

Calvin, who graduated in International Hospitality and Tourism in 2016, is thrilled to win the accolade for Sushi Lab, based in Guildford, especially as he has only been trading for eight months.

After taking nominations from diners, thousands voted in the Listener Choice Awards, with Sushi Lab taking 26 per cent of the vote.

He told Eagle Radio: “It's been quite challenging. When we first opened nobody knew who we were. But people have started to know we are here and we are quite unique, with unusual Japanese food and snacks and drink which you can’t get anywhere else in Guildford.

“I have always wanted to start my own business. In my final year at Surrey I was deciding between looking for jobs or going home, but I thought if I want to start my own business, now is the time to do it."

It certainly was and congratulations to Calvin!
