Leading league table positions for Faculty subjects

The Complete University Guide 2016 reveals that nine of our Engineering and Physical Science subjects are in the UK top 20.

Demonstrating the breadth of excellence across the Faculty, nine undergraduate degree subjects offered by Surrey’s Faculty of Engineering & Physical Sciences (FEPS) have ranked within the Complete University Guide 2016 top 20, with four scoring places in the top ten.

Overall, the University has soared four places to become eighth best university in the UK, reflecting the investment Surrey has put into learning and teaching across the board. This consolidates its rise up the major league tables in recent years, including its sixth place ranking in The Guardian University Guide 2015.

The Complete University Guide 2016 sees four of our engineering subjects ranking in the top 10, with Aerospace Engineering jumping two places to number six, Medical Engineering in seventh place, and both Civil Engineering and Electronic Engineering at number eight. Meanwhile Computing has shown significant progress leaping up 12 places to 20th, and Mathematics has consolidated its position within the top 20, rising one place to number 19.

The Complete University Guide is based on performance in a number of key areas including student satisfaction, entry standards, graduate job prospects and quality of research. According to the league table, the proportion of students to have found a job within six months of completing their course tops 90 per cent for Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Physics and Computing, while for Civil Engineering, graduate employment prospects are a hugely impressive 98 per cent.

The Faculty also scores highly when it comes to student satisfaction. According to the latest National Student Survey (2014), there is an overall satisfaction rate of 90 per cent for Electronic Engineering, and over 85 per cent for Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics and Chemical Engineering.

Professor Jonathan Seville, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, said, “The Complete University Guide figures confirm that we are offering high quality programmes across the subject areas, reflecting our continual investment in the best academic staff and facilities. Our impressive graduate employment rates are testament to the industrial focus of our courses and our renowned Professional Training placement programme.”

The league table, full methodology and other information are available on the Complete University Guide website.
