Sports support helps Katie achieve her goal

Talented netballer Katie Harris enjoyed tremendous success in her sport last year, winning both the South Eastern Conference Cup and the South Eastern 2A league with the University team, coming fourth in the Premier 1 league with the Downs Netball Club and clinching the Superleague title with Surrey Storm, based at Surrey Sports Park.

Alongside this success, Katie has been studying hard to be a paramedic and last year was on placement. Juggling these commitments has been made easier for Katie who is the first recipient of a sports scholarship funded by MBA graduate Fred Cahill.

Katie is on the University’s High-Performance Athlete Support Scheme (HPASS), designed to assist gifted student athletes fulfil their sporting potential, and her scholarship relieves the financial burden of studying full time alongside netball training and matches.

She said: “With my recent placement and the training and match commitments for all three teams, it’s sometimes hard to work as much as needed so the financial support is very beneficial. The HPASS scheme and the scholarship have allowed me to continue with sport alongside my study and without this I don’t think I would have been able to cram in as much at uni, so a big thank-you!”
