AI regulation and control problem

We are seeking to fill one PhD position to take part in an interdisciplinary research project that explores how to regulate and enforce the control mechanisms of AI-systems with the special emphasis on the interaction between human and machine. The research will focus on exploring the practical challenges associated with the use of advanced AI systems and it will critically discuss ideas to implement selected principles of AI systems, such trustworthiness, accountability, equitability, traceability, governability, and others. Specifically we are looking for:

1. A highly motivated student with deep interest and in studying regulatory issues of AI systems, ideally from a socio-legal perspective;
2. A person with primarily a legal background to focus on the governance of AI in selected sector(s). This includes mapping and analyzing both “hard law”, such as data protection obligations, as well the development and meaning of “soft law” in the shape of ethical guidelines, best practices, etc;
3. A person interested in deep thinking but with a strong orientation in practical problems and willingness to conduct empirical studies, such as interviews with industry representatives.
4. A person with an additional computer science or data science experience is a plus.

The positions will be placed at the School of Law at the University of Surrey, and will be part of the Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence, a pan-university institute that brings together Surrey’s core AI-related expertise in cross-disciplinary areas.

All applicants should have (or expect to obtain) a first-class degree in Law, Socio-Legal Studies, Philosophy, or Public Policy or MSc with Distinction (or 70% average) and a strong interest in pursuing research in this field. Additional experience which is relevant to the area of research is also advantageous.

IELTS requirements: IELTS 6.5 or above (or equivalent) with no sub-test of less than 6.
