Don't miss out on your chance to join one of the best amateur orchestras in Surrey

By Natasha Meredith

This October, the University of Surrey is opening its doors to the local community and welcoming musicians to join its talented staff and student orchestra.

Conductor and orchestra

Local musicians are invited to join us at a launch event on Sunday 1st October for a play-day of rehearsals and a performance of Stravinsky’s masterpiece, ‘The Rite of Spring.’

The orchestra will be led by the eminent conductor Russell Keable, internationally recognised for his world-class performances with the London Mozart Players, BBC Concert Orchestra, Royal Oman Symphony Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Local musicians will be able to join forces with the University to create the region’s largest Symphony Orchestra, and hone their skills under Russell’s expert guidance.

Professor Tony Myatt, Head of Music and Media at the University of Surrey said, “The new University of Surrey Orchestra will be an extraordinary opportunity to unite the staff, students and expertise of the University with talented and passionate musicians from the local community.

“I am particularly excited that the new orchestra will provide high quality classical music concerts for audiences in Surrey, and provide an opportunity for its players to encounter and experience some of the larger-scale works of the orchestral repertoire.”

The Orchestra Day will take place at PATS Studio One at the University of Surrey from 11am-6pm, with rehearsals at 11am-1pm and then 3pm-5pm. An informal performance for friends and family is scheduled to take place at 5.30pm.

For those wanting to join the orchestra, rehearsals will take place every Monday evening to deliver 2-3 concerts throughout the year. A showcase concert celebrating film and TV music is planned for spring 2018 when orchestra players will have the opportunity to play an assortment of timeless film and TV scores including the music of Star Wars.

The Orchestra Day is free to attend as either a musician or a guest, and light refreshments will be provided. For more information about the event or joining the orchestra, please contact:
