Chrissy Gavin - MMath (Year 4)

I enjoyed doing the project a lot, it is a very relaxed working environment and there was a lot of flexibility for me to investigate the areas of the project that I found most interesting.

I first applied to do a summer project after my second year. At the time I had been considering switching to the MMath program, and thought that the project would help me to decide, as well as being great work experience.

I enjoyed doing the project a lot, it is a very relaxed working environment and there was a lot of flexibility for me to investigate the areas of the project that I found most interesting. During the project I used some mathematical techniques which I learnt from my degree, as well as many new methods. It was interesting to see the techniques I had seen before applied to real research problems. It was also very rewarding because at the end of the project I felt I had made a real contribution to the research within the department.

Doing the project taught me that I really had an interest in mathematical modelling and potentially a career in mathematical research; as a result I switched the MMath program, and did another project the following summer.

I would definitely recommend it to anybody who is considering doing a Masters degree, or who would like to get a better idea of what a career in research might be like.
