Meet Prof Karen Bullock, ESRC IAA Co-Director

Karen Bullock is a professor of criminology in the Department of Sociology. She conducts research and teaches in the area of policing and crime reduction.

Her research generally has an applied element and aims to improve policy and practice in respect to policing and responses to crime problems. As a consequence she works closely with government departments and police and other organisations.

For example, she has conducted research aimed at better understanding the nature of injuries that police officers experience in the course of conducting their duties. The aim of this research being to inform and improve responses to officers who have been injured in the line of duty.

She has conducted research on the experiences of police officers as they retire from the service. This research aimed in part to examine the forms of support officers would benefit from as they transition to retirement.

Presently, she is conducting research on the experiences of families of police officers, equally with the aim of understanding the types of support police families would benefit from.
