Institution of Civil Engineers Frederick Palmer award for best paper in 2017
Prof Mark Lawson and former doctorate student Dr Eleftherios Aggelopoulos won the Institution of Civil Engineers Frederick Palmer award for best paper in 2017 in the ICE Journal ‘Structures and Buildings’ that was presented at the ICE Awards Ceremony on 8th October 2018.
The paper is entitled: ‘Serviceability performance of steel–concrete composite beams’, Structures and Buildings, Volume 170 Issue 2, February, 2017, pp. 98-114. Joint authors were Prof Dennis Lam from Bradford University and Dr Sebastian Nellinger, formerly of the University of Luxembourg. The paper developed a design formula for the effective stiffness of composite I-section beams and cellular beams taking account of the stiffness of the shear connectors, particularly for composite beams with low degrees of shear connection. It was based on work done in the EU project and the developed design formula was calibrated against 8 beam tests of 6 and 8m span carried out at the University of Stuttgart and Luxembourg and two long span composite beam tests at Bradford, one of which was on a 15.3m span composite cellular beam.
