University of Surrey Orchestra Day hits a high note

On Sunday 2 February the University of Surrey Orchestra opened their doors again to the local community and welcomed over 70 talented players to PATS Studio 1, on the Stag Hill Campus.

Residents of Surrey united with current and former students and staff of The University to spend a play-day rehearsing Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6 (Pathetique), conducted by the Orchestra’s and Department of Music and Media’s Director of Conducting, Russell Keable.

Russell comments ‘I don’t believe there is an opportunity for local musicians as unique as our Orchestra Days, anywhere else in the South East. It’s a level platform for professionals, people who haven’t played for years, and those still at school or college. Brothers play side by side; mothers and daughters share a music stand and couples are able to play as part of the same orchestra for the first time.’

The play-day concluded with a free informal concert to friends, family and visiting members of the public who were extremely impressed that such a rousing performance could be accomplished in such a short space of time.

The next Orchestra Day will be held in Autumn 2020.
