Virtual visit from Emmy award-winning composer Michael Price
Surrey alumni and Emmy award-winning composer Michael Price virtually re-visited the Department of Music and Media on Thursday, to deliver a very special event.
Michael is best known for TV dramas Sherlock, Dracula and Unforgotten. He has released two albums on Erased Tapes records and produced the film Delicious. He worked on the blockbuster films Band of Brothers and X-men, and his credits also include music editor for Children of Men, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Love Actually and Bridget Jones.
As part of the Department’s Film and Video Production Technology degree and Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) industry talks series, Michael was due to return to his former University campus on Thursday to present a Department-wide event. While the in-person event itself had to be cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Michael invited staff and students to join him virtually for a Zoom webinar instead.
During the session, Michael answered questions from students ranging from career advice and fitting into a team, to how to find your voice and unique sound, whilst creating music which enhances, rather than detracts from the main action in a film or series. You can watch the full event on YouTube.
Professor Tony Myatt, Head of the Department of Music and Media, said: “We were thrilled when Michael agreed to come back to Surrey and present to our Department, and we are incredibly grateful that regardless of the current challenges we face, we were still able to offer an audience with him. For our students to be able to listen to someone who was once in their shoes, studying Music and Sound Recording at Surrey, and hear how Michael has worked hard to craft such a successful career is a truly inspiring opportunity.”
Michael has been talking about his efforts to adapt to lockdown by running weekly composer coffee breaks using the platform Zoom, which are available to watch on his YouTube channel.
