Surrey’s Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) is the number one department in the UK for Computer Vision. There was no doubt in my mind that amazing research is done here at the university and that's something I wanted to be a part of.

I knew Surrey would be a good place to do a PhD as the Institute for Communication Systems is a world-leading research centre with an outstanding reputation.

Having an experienced supervisor in my research area has been invaluable to me throughout my PhD journey... their unwavering support and encouragement have significantly boosted my self-confidence, especially in times when I needed it the most.

The Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing, or CVSSP as it’s known, is a great place to undertake a PhD in machine learning or machine perception. It has a diverse range of research groups all with their own areas of expertise.

I loved doing experimental research and working with semiconductor devices! I also developed my data analysis and coding skills, and became familiar with how a research team operates in industry.

Bowei Li is a PhD research student at our Advanced Technology Institute who originally studied for his undergraduate and masters degrees in China. At Surrey, he's working on next generation solar power cells and he’s just had his first academic journal paper published.

My journey to the University of Surrey started when I was still a masters student. I was studying at São Paulo State University in the Chemistry Institute of Araraquara, Brazil, when I had the opportunity to spend 10 weeks conducting experiments in Surrey’s Advanced Technology Institute.
