Sustainability on the Executive Board

Professor Bob Nichol
Chair of the Napier Group | Executive Board Lead for Sustainability
Biography
Bob is the chair of the Napier Group, which develops and implements sustainability policy and plans for the University. He is also the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences and, as a member of the Executive Board of the University, has formal responsibility for sustainability at Surrey.

Martin Wiles
Head of Sustainability
Biography
Martin leads the development and delivery of the University’s energy and sustainability strategy.
He manages projects, activities and events to improve the University’s environmental sustainability and works with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the delivery of the broad sustainability strategic objectives, delivering cultural change across the University.

Andy Harman
Energy Manager
Biography
Andy oversees energy management at the University.
He identifies and prioritises areas for energy efficiency work and works closely with the Building Management Systems. Andy works with the Head of Energy and Sustainability on the University’s energy procurement strategy. He creates performance reports and works with building stakeholders around the University.

Biography
Marc aims to reduce energy usage across the University.

Carbon Reduction and Sustainability Officer
Biography
Sarah is working on carbon reduction at the University.

Anna Roberts
Sustainability & Energy Assistant
Biography
Anna is responsible for managing utility bills. They support the Sustainability team’' energy saving and sustainability initiatives, including the Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework.

Charlotte Discombe
Sustainability Awareness Coordinator
Biography
Charlotte manages sustainability awareness across campus and is responsible for organising campaigns and engagement activities.

Douglas Badger
PhD Practitioner
Biography
Douglas helps to deliver sustainable procurement projects with our Procurement Team, as well as undertaking a research PhD into sustainable working practices that are then utilised within the University's procurement activity.

Nathalie Hinds
Director, Institute Operations, Innovation and Partnerships
Biography
Nathalie drives the work of the Institute for Sustainability in delivering sustainability within the local community as well as working with researchers on activity around sustainability. Nathalie also leads work on the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the University's return for the Times Higher Impact Ranking.

Nick Jones
Head of Procurement
Biography
Nick’s role involves oversight of the Sustainable Procurement Strategy and responsibility for embedding sustainable best practice into procurement across the University.
As our Sustainable Procurement Champion, he is in close contact with higher education sustainable procurement groups, researching and implementing best practice responsible procurement across the University.

Iain Main
Sports Groundsman and Landscape Manager
Biography
Iain is responsible for the University's grounds. He is also the University lead for biodiversity, working to main and improve biodiversity across our 67 hectares campus.

Amy Woods
Senior Team Leader
Biography
Amy leads the Estates and Facilities Logistics team. She is also responsible for waste management on campus and is working towards improving the University's recycling rate, as well as reducing the amount of waste produced on site.

Debbie Nottridge
Head of Catering
Biography
Debbie manages the University's Catering Team. A key part of this work is delivering a sustainable and ethical food plan, which includes providing vegan meals and reducing single-use plastic across University outlets.

Ian Tilsed
Director of Support and Operations (IT)
Biography
Ian develops and implements a sustainable IT plan, particularly looking at the carbon footprint of IT and how to reduce it.

Dean Bilsby
Network Operations Team Lead
Biography
Dean manages day-to-day operations of IT infrastructure, including managing the carbon emissions from IT use and implementing actions to reduce emissions.

Matt Aikin
VP Community (Students' Union)
Biography
Matt is working to make the Students' Union and University more sustainable. He is interested in a wide range of sustainability areas, including: the management of the University's Community Garden, initiatives to reduce disposable coffee cups and charging for electric vehicles.
Team statement
The University of Surrey is committed to embedding sustainability in everything that it does, that includes teaching, research, our role within the community and our operations. The University has made commitments to reduce carbon emissions to reduce our impact on climate change, to include sustainability in course modules and to promote and support research into sustainability.
The Sustainability team commits to reducing its energy use and carbon emissions, reducing waste in all its forms, enhancing our biodiversity and promoting sustainability to other teams.
The Sustainability team also aims to help, facilitate and enable other university teams to carry out their work in a sustainable manner.
