Wireless Sensor Network Lab

The Wireless Sensor Network Research Lab hosts a state-of-the art experimental research facility for WS&AN. The test-bed facility is used for the prototyping and evaluation of developed protocol solutions and serves as a basis for the development of novel mobile context aware services and applications.

The test bed consists of wireless sensor and actuator nodes that can be organised in different network topologies and individually configured for various experiments and uses the backbone infrastructure of the WNT (Wireless Network Testbed). The test bed facility also includes servers hosting an IMS service platform and laptops, servers and mobile devices some of them serving as mobile gateways devices, some of them used for protocol and application development and execution of context-aware application and services. In the following an overview of test bed components is provided.

WS&AN related equipment

  • 70 WS&A nodes - SensiNode Micro.2420 (MSP430 + CC2420 platform) with an 802.15.4 radio
  • 5 WS&A nodes with very small form factor - SensiNode Nano.2430 (CC2430 platform) with an 802.15.4 radio
  • 15 prototyping boards for digital sensors - SensiNode Micro.Proto
  • 5 data aquistion boards for analogue sensors with PSoC- SensiNode Micro.4
  • 10 USB boards - SensiNode Micro.USB
  • 3 USB 802.15.4 dongles – SensiNode Nano.USB
  • 2 body sensor networks: based on the Micro.4 with custom signal conditioning boards providing physiological sensors for ECG and heart rate, galvanic skin response, skin temperature, breathing rate and acceleration information
  • 1 body sensor network dev-kit – based on the Imperial College BSN nodes
  • Various digital and analogue sensor probes and sensor IO boards

Mobile devices

  • 2 Nokia N770 Internet tablets – Linux based mobile devices with WLAN and Bluetooth interfaces
  • 1 Samsung Q1 Ultra portable tablet – Windows XP based mobile device with Ethernet, WLAN and Bluetooth interfaces
  • 1 Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox PDA phone – Windows Mobile 5 based mobile device with GPRS/UMTS, WLAN and Bluetooth network interfaces
  • 1 Sharp Zaurus SL-3200 – Linux based mobile device with WLAN interface

IMS service platform

  • Multi-domain server system providing IMS core functionality including S-CSCF, S-CSCF, I-CSCF, HSS, MGWF and different IMS application servers and clients
  • Various laptops and desktop servers for application development and demonstrations
