What you will study
If you’re a graduate of an engineering, science or related discipline, our unique course will train you in general and specialist process systems engineering subjects.
Throughout your course, you’ll be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to prepare you for the systems challenges you’ll face in industry or academia upon graduation. The MSc will widen your understanding of the fundamental concepts of process systems engineering.
You’ll also be provided with a thorough grounding in current technologies and trends, preparing you for a rewarding career or further research.
Facilities, equipment and academic support
As part of your learning experience, you’ll have at your disposal a wide range of relevant software needed to support the course material dissertation projects. In recent years, this work has included the design of various knowledge-based and business systems on the internet, the application of optimisation algorithms, and semantic web applications.
If you choose to pursue a technology-based project, numerous laboratory facilities across the Faculty and the University are also available to you, such as the Fluor pilot plant facility, a control and robotics facility, and signal processing labs.
The work related to the MSc dissertation can often be carried out in parallel with, and in support of, ongoing research. In the past, several graduates have carried on their MSc research to a PhD course.

Engineers and scientists are increasingly expected to have skills in process systems engineering alongside their main technical and/or scientific expertise to enable optimisation of process design and operation.
As a graduate of this course, you’ll be well prepared to help technology-intensive organisations make important decisions in view of vast amounts of information by adopting, combining, implementing and executing the right technologies.

The University operates a credit framework for all taught programmes based on a 15-credit tariff. Modules can be either 15, 30, 45 or 60, 75 and 120 credits, and additionally for some masters dissertations, 90 credits.
The structure of our programmes follows clear educational aims that are tailored to each programme. These are all outlined in the programme specifications which include further details such as the learning outcomes:
Course timetables are normally available one month before the start of the semester. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week (Monday–Friday). Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities. A minimum of a 2:2 UK honours degree in either Chemistry, Engineering or Physics, or a recognised equivalent international qualification. We'll also consider relevant work experience if you don't meet these requirements.

If this applies to you, a process called recognition of prior learning (RPL) may allow you to enter your course at a point appropriate to your previous learning and experience, or to join the start of a course without the formal entry requirements. This means that you may be exempt from certain elements of study in the course for which you have applied and be awarded credit based on your previous qualifications/experience. There are restrictions on RPL for some courses and fees may be payable for certain claims.

- These fees apply to students commencing study in the academic year 2020-21 only. Fees for new starters are reviewed annually.
- If you are on a two-year or three-year part-time structured masters course, the annual fee is payable in Year 1 and Year 2 of the course.
