"I had the opportunity to hear from a patient during a lecture, a perspective that can be difficult to convey in a non-clinical setting. This experience not only helped my academic writing but also gave me an insight into the communication skills that are integral to psychological practice."

Course

Health Psychology MSc

I chose to study health psychology because I intend to work within the psychological field, either as a health psychologist or a clinical psychologist. I worked as a Health and Social Care Coordinator following my undergraduate studies, which gave me an insight into the struggles facing our healthcare system here in the UK. I believe Surrey’s MSc Health Psychology course will provide me with a solid grounding in the psychological frameworks that aim to benefit our healthcare system.

Surrey was one of my top choices because I strongly admire its commitment to world-class research, including the translational research being conducted by the Health Psychology Research Group

As a part-time student, it is important that I can access support remotely, as I am not always on campus. Surrey’s IT facilities are exceptional, with staff providing all module materials online through SurreyLearn, and keeping lines of communication open between themselves and students on the course.

The staff are very knowledgeable and passionate about their areas of study and it shows in the design and structure of the course.

I love studying such a cutting-edge subject that challenges my views on health, and I wholeheartedly believe that health psychology holds many of the answers to the problems public health faces today.

I really enjoy being on campus as it is spacious and accessible. It feels like a mini city; there is even a shop in the Library where I can buy groceries. I can spend the whole day on campus with all I need available to me so I can concentrate on my studies. There is also a lot of green space, which provides a nice atmosphere for studying, especially in the summer.

I had previously been out of formal education for two years and was initially very anxious about beginning my masters. However, since starting at Surrey I have been surprised by how quickly I have improved my academic writing skills and gained confidence in my own abilities. My outlook has changed a lot and I feel more confident about my future.

I believe my time at Surrey has positively impacted my employability as I’ve had the opportunity to improve several transferrable skills. This includes skills such as data analysis and communication, which will be integral to my future career in the psychological field.

I came to Surrey believing that I was making the best choice for my future career aspirations, and I have not been disappointed by what is on offer here.
