My course

I’ve always been fascinated by microbes and the idea that something so tiny can have such a huge impact on the wider world. Studying on my BSc (Hons) Microbiology course has made me realise that the subject is even more intricate and interesting than I thought.

I really enjoy being in the labs and getting stuck into a good practical. The teaching staff are eager to help, and are all warm and approachable too.

Sometimes the workload can be high, but it’s a great feeling when you get everything finished and the University has some great services to help out when things get tough.

My placement

I’ve just finished my Professional Training placement which I spent at TMO Renewables/Rebio Technologies at the Surrey Research Park doing research into bioethanol production using thermophilic bacteria from environmental soil samples.

I had the opportunity to design and carry out my own experiments, and knowing that the company was using the results I’d generated was a great feeling. I gained a lot of experience of a wide range of techniques which I’m finding really handy in the final year.

The placement has made me much more confident and experienced in my lab work, and has given me more insight into what I might do after my studies, such as a PhD or working in research of some kind. Everything about it was a positive experience.

My career and development

Overall, I’m so glad I came to Surrey - the University has given me the best years of my life! Every day is a new experience and a chance to learn, and I am so much more confident and relaxed. I wish the old me could see me now!
