Course

Petroleum Refining Systems Engineering MSc

Graduation year

2013

Before coming to Surrey to study for the MSc Petroleum Refining Systems Engineering, I was working full time as a production planning engineer at one of the petroleum refineries based in the Middle East. I wanted to upgrade my specialist knowledge, which was incomplete, and Surrey was one of the very few universities in the world to offer a well-designed course for the downstream petroleum sector.

The MSc offers a wide selection of modules which address the significant challenges being faced by petroleum refineries across the globe. The sector needs to reduce its carbon footprint while at the same time optimising its processes in order to remain competitive compared to other forms of energy.

The aspects of the course I most enjoyed were the modules on optimisation and decision-making tools, refinery technology and process optimisation, while I also found the workshop oriented class discussions very useful.

I found that the academic staff in the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering were extremely professional, knowledgeable, experienced and helpful. The course is intense and, without their efficiency, it couldn’t be completed within such a short timeframe. The University itself is very well organised and has good facilities, including the large library building which has all kinds of reference materials available for study and research.

Before starting the course I was a little doubtful about whether it could really add value to my existing refinery knowledge as I already had a few years’ experience. After the course, I realised the difference it had made to my knowledge about petroleum refining and the energy sector as a whole.

Soon after I completed my masters course, I got a call from a national oil company based in Abu Dhabi and was interviewed and selected for the position of strategy specialist. Today I’m working in Canada in an oil refinery as a crude oil scheduler and planner. I can definitely say that the MSc has raised my professional value across the globe, adding immense value to my CV and helping me to get my desired job.
