What you will study
This course is designed to give you both practical and academic experience.
During your studies, you’ll gain skills in the following:
- Entrepreneurship theory
- Product-market research based on Lean Start-up
- Business modelling & scaling
- Business planning
- Digital marketing and social media
- Innovation management.
You’ll also gain practical experience in:
- Your research project working with start-ups based in Surrey Research Park
- Digital skills from tutorial in web design and development
- An applied digital project with external stakeholders.
Your final project will apply your cumulative learning to develop a project related to your future aspirations. It may be either a business plan based on your own business idea or a consulting project developed with a corporate sponsor.
Every year, we’re impressed by our students’ unbridled enthusiasm for learning by doing, something which reflects Surrey’s practical approach to entrepreneurship and innovation.
Last year, the MSc cohort had many significant milestones and achievements.
Among other things, they:
- Participated in the SETSquared Partnership Bootcamp
- Raised almost £85,000 across six different crowdfunding campaigns in the module ‘Digital Marketing and Social Media’
- Successfully designed and built five different mobile apps in the module ‘Entrepreneurship and the Digital Economy’
- Worked with companies in the SETSquared Partnership to develop product-market research as part of our ‘New Business Venturing’ module including the following companies and projects:
- Allianz AG — online pet community
- AMO.ai — online artificial intelligence marketing service
- Bespoke Business Software — cloud-based business management – software
- Macusoft — artificial intelligence-based eye treatment tool
- No More Teabags – aerosol-based tea product.
- Participated in two field trips to Microsoft business accelerator, Microsoft Scale Up London
- For their final project, developed several consultancy projects and original business plans, some of which will launch real businesses.
Study and work abroad
Students have the opportunity to carry out their final project with the University of North Carolina State. Here, students work on project teams with designated companies based around the high-tech research triangle near Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.

We offer careers information, advice and guidance to all students whilst studying with us, which is extended to our alumni for three years after leaving the University.

Academic year structure
Curriculum typically combines academic theory with practical experience.
In your first term, you will study principles related to Lean Start-up in our New Business Venturing module and then apply them to a project for product-marketing within start-up companies.
In your second term, digital skills such as web development and digital marketing are studied in the Digital Product Development module before being applied in future projects with external stakeholders.

Important: In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, the University has had to change the delivery (and in some cases the content) of its programmes, together with certain University services and facilities for the 2020/21 academic year. The University operates a credit framework for all taught programmes based on a 15-credit tariff. Modules can be either 15, 30, 45 or 60, 75 and 120 credits, and additionally for some masters dissertations, 90 credits.
The structure of our programmes follows clear educational aims that are tailored to each programme. These are all outlined in the programme specifications which include further details such as the learning outcomes:
New students will receive their personalised timetable in Welcome Week, and in subsequent semesters, two weeks prior to the start of semester. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week (Monday–Friday). Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities. A minimum of a 2:2 UK honours degree or a recognised equivalent international qualification.

The University of Surrey recognises that many students enter their higher education course with valuable knowledge and skills developed through a range of professional, vocational and community contexts. If this applies to you, a process called recognition of prior learning (RPL) may allow you to enter your course at a point appropriate to your previous learning and experience, or to join the start of a course without the formal entry requirements. This means that you may be exempt from certain elements of study in the course for which you have applied and be awarded credit based on your previous qualifications/experience. There are restrictions on RPL for some courses and fees may be payable for certain claims.

- These fees apply to students commencing study in the academic year 2021-22 only. Fees for new starters are reviewed annually.
- If you are on a two-year full-time Euromasters or MFA programme, or a two-year or three-year part-time masters programme (excluding modular/self-paced/distance learning), the annual fee is payable in Year 1 and Year 2 of the programme.
- Annual fees will increase by 4% for each subsequent year of study, rounded up to the nearest £100, subject to any overriding applicable legislative requirements.
