The programme structure is closely mapped with requirements for CIPD’s Advanced Diploma in HRM offering students the opportunity to become a Chartered Member of the CIPD upon successful completion of all modules related specified in their requirements. Students not wishing to gain CIPD qualifications have the opportunity to craft a degree with a broader business grounding by taking optional modules in strategy and accounting and finance.

Programme overview

Our MSc Human Resource Management programme develops your ability to best utilise human resources to create added value for customers and to secure a competitive advantage for the organisation.

The programme will encourage you to develop positive and critical attitudes towards leadership, change and enterprise. A strong emphasis is placed on developing an international perspective to ensure you obtain an education that has real relevance in today’s global economy.

The programme is built around a central core of modules providing a thorough grounding in HRM. Specialist modules then allow you to tailor your studies around your interests and career objectives.

Programme structure

In Semester 1, students are introduced to the foundations of people management and HRM practices, as well as the wider context of work in which these take place. In Semester 2, students are introduced to the more technical aspects of the regulation of work and people development. They have the option to specialise further in international aspects of HRM and leadership and leadership development, or opt for a broader grounding in the fundamentals of business in strategy and accounting. International relevance

With the importance of globalisation, it is highly likely that, after graduation, you will spend at least part of your career in a multinational organisation. You will encounter management problems which are largely created by the cross-cultural nature of the modern organisation.

To prepare you for this environment, we have purposefully designed a programme which is international in terms of its content and focus. Our academics have considerable international experience.

Educational aims of the programme

The MSc in Human Resource Management develops students’ knowledge and skills in the evaluation, discussion and analysis of issues in the human resource management sector.

Students will learn how managers are best able to utilise human resources to create added value for customers and to secure a competitive advantage for their organisation.

Knowledge and understanding

Students will gain knowledge of:

  • Human resource management strategies for firms and international organisations
  • Training and development strategies for individuals and firms, principals for accounting and finance; industrial relations and employment relations

Intellectual / cognitive skills

Students will:

  • Develop ability and skills to collect qualitative and quantitative data necessary to effectively manage people in organisations
  • Understanding the dynamic and interrelated nature of human resource management strategy and business strategies, and the impact on stakeholders

Professional practical skills

Students will develop positive and critical attitudes towards leadership, change and enterprise, so as to reflect the dynamism and vibrancy of the business and management environment.

Key / transferable skills

Students will gain the ability to critically evaluate theory and empirical evidence.

Entry Requirements

2.1 Degree in:

  • Business Administration
  • Economics
  • Human Resource Management
  • Law
  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Social Policy
  • Public Administration

Degrees (2.1 or ongoing) in other subjects should be referred to faculty.
Applicants can be made an alternative offer for International Business Management, if they meet the lower requirements for that programme.
If an applicant’s Bachelor’s degree is not in a subject related to the MSc, some relevant work experience would be an advantage. Higher level professional qualifications may also be accepted. Each applicant is assessed on their own merit.
