Health sciences, nursing and midwifery
Nurses, midwives, paramedics and allied health professionals are on the frontline of the NHS, looking after the diverse needs of patients, families and carers, within a variety of settings. If you’re a dynamic, driven and people-orientated person, who’ll treat patients as individuals and take the time to understand who they are, what they need, and how you can best provide care, then this is the perfect field for you.
By joining us at Surrey you’ll be able to study 50 per cent theory and 50 per cent practice on nursing courses ranked:
- 4th in the UK for nursing by the Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2022
- 3rd in the UK by the Complete University Guide 2023
- Joint 7th in the UK and 151-200 globally by the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022.
And our paramedic science courses ranked 2nd in the UK by the Complete University Guide 2023.
You’ll be taught by a multidisciplinary team of lecturers, who are all healthcare professionals with experience of working in the NHS. Many are also active researchers, investigating topics like cancer, dementia, ethics and compassionate practice.

Why I became an adult nurse
Adult nursing can open up your career in healthcare – hear how some of our staff started as adult nurses, and see where they are today.
Professor Melaine Coward decided to become a nurse at age 13 to fulfil her love for people, volunteering at her local cottage hospital to wash and feed patients. After qualifying, she specialised as a cancer nurse, before stepping into higher education to train the next generation of healthcare professionals. Melaine is now the Head of the School of Health Sciences, after a 20 year journey at Surrey.
Louis Nyuyse became an Adult Nurse after a near-death experience inspired him to work in emergency care, looking after vulnerable people when they need help the most.
Wendy was inspired to train as an Adult Nurse after she lost both of her parents to cancer when they were in their early 50s.
