Research

We are widely recognised for our field-defining and conceptually driven empirical research and its pioneering quantitative and qualitative methods work. We are known for our applied approach to sociology and our sociological policy focus is reflected in the ways we work in partnership with a range of private, public and third-sector organisations.

In the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021 we were ranked 9th for research that is world-leading and internationally excellent, and all of our impact case studies were judged to have outstanding or very considerable impacts. All aspects of our research environment were considered to be conducive to producing research of world-leading or internationally excellent quality.
