This module aims to enable you to increase your knowledge, understanding and clinical judgement in relation to providing competent and skilled assistance to the operating surgeon. You will be expected to carry out this role within the clinical governance framework.
This module will allow you to critically analyse practice in this area of healthcare.

Indicative module content includes:
- Principles of pathology
- Wound healing and closure
- Effective communication
- Surgical haemostasis and retraction
- Legal and ethical aspects related to extending practice
- Clinical decision making
- Human factors
- Minimal access surgery
- Clinical risk.
- Portfolio consisting of competencies
- Case study.
This surgical first assistant role is an extended role for registered practitioners.
You must have worked in the specialist area of operating theatres for two years and have an ability to work in the surgical first assistant role. You are also required to have the support of a consultant surgeon who can assess your surgical practice and an experienced practitioner who can assess your professional skills.
