If you’d like to study a masters in healthcare which offers flexibility, our MSc Healthcare Practice is for you. You’ll have the opportunity to boost your academic and clinical development with an individual learning programme relevant to your area of clinical expertise.

Are you a non-UK national with a nursing or healthcare qualification at degree-level? If you’re a qualified healthcare professional, our course can help you gain insight into healthcare delivery within the NHS.

This MSc does not give access for registration with the UK Nursing and Midwifery Council but practice placements may be arranged subject to conditions being met.

Academic year structure

Our course operates on a 15 credit module structure over two semesters. The taught modules are worth 15 credits, or multiples of, and add up to the 150 hours of teaching you will experience. This consists of student contact, private study and assessment. Your dissertation module is worth 60 credits, and you can study this course part-time over five years or full-time over two years.

The University operates a credit framework for all taught programmes based on a 15-credit tariff. Modules can be either 15, 30, 45 or 60 credits, and additionally for some masters dissertations, 90 credits.

Timetable

Course timetables are normally available one month before the start of the semester. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week (Monday–Friday). Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities. Academic Skills and Development

Academic Skills and Development is a learning space in the Library where our learning development team is based. It comprises dedicated Student Learning Advisers and Information Skills Librarians who can help you develop your academic and research skills, including writing, presenting, revision and critical thinking.

The University’s Disability and Neurodiversity Service supports students with disabilities, long-term health conditions, specific learning differences (such as dyslexia and dyspraxia) and other neurodiverse conditions (including autism spectrum and attention deficit disorder).

English language support

Our English Language Support Programme (ELSP) provides tailored English language support during your studies. It is particularly valuable to students who speak English as a second or additional language, but native speakers are also welcome.

Entry requirements

A minimum of a 2:2 in a relevant UK honours degree, or a recognised equivalent international qualification. You must be currently registered as a healthcare professional to apply.

Selection process

Applications will be reviewed on an individual basis and potential students will be offered advice by an academic tutor on the suitability of the award and their module choice within the award. This is dependent on factors such as currency of prior learning, and their personal and professional development needs.

Students should be able to show potential benefits from studying for the award and a commitment to attempting the assessment items. If students have not studied on an academic course within the last five years, they may be asked to carry out an academic piece of writing as part of the selection process.

Credit transfer

The University of Surrey recognises that many students enter their higher education course with valuable knowledge and skills developed through a range of professional, vocational and community contexts. If this applies to you, a process called recognition of prior learning (RPL) may allow you to enter your course at a point appropriate to your previous learning and experience, or to join the start of a course without the formal entry requirements. This means that you may be exempt from certain elements of study in the course for which you have applied and be awarded credit based on your previous qualifications/experience. There are restrictions on RPL for some courses and fees may be payable for certain claims.

  • If you are on a two-year full-time Euromasters or MFA programme, or a two-year or three-year part-time masters programme (excluding modular/self-paced/distance learning), the annual fee is payable in Year 1 and Year 2 of the programme.

Kate Granger Building

The School of Health Sciences has now moved to the Kate Granger Building located on 30 Priestley Road on the Surrey Research Park. This is where our nursing, midwifery, paramedic science and operating department practice courses are taught.
