At the Human Insight Lab, we uncover and apply insights from human behaviour to optimise business performance. Whether we’re studying how consumers engage with an app or website, understanding their emotional responses to complex decisions, or co-developing a digital product, our aim is to identify what works – and why.

Artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) creates income-earning opportunities for hundreds of millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The sector’s importance is often overlooked by the region’s policymakers however, because most of its activities are found in the informal economy. Professor Hilson’s research builds a case for formalising ASM in SSA, and identifies strategies for achieving this.
Governments in Latin America face pressure to improve public services, reduce costs and increase efficiency through the better use of technology. Research at Surrey Business School’s Centre of Digital Economy (CoDE) has shown that new technology needs to be accompanied by changes in behaviour, governance and practices to support digital transformation; findings that have had significant impact on government agencies and businesses across Latin America.
